Bangor’s Best Restaurant

The Pho Hoa Grill is the best restaurant in Bangor, Maine. When Becky and I got married at city hall last spring it was the first place we thought to eat afterwards. Eloping makes you wildly hungry it turns out. There isn’t a restaurant I can think of in the Bangor Area that has commanded my heart and stomach nearly as much as this family restaurant on Ohio Street.

The presence of affordable, delicious, and tirelessly good Vietnamese food in Bangor is something to be excited about. The crossover between Maine’s seasonal demands and the delicious adaptability of Vietnamese food goes hand in hand. The execution of quick and casual service at an affordable price made this restaurant a major part of our farm’s psychological reward system. On a rough workday, our carrot on a stick is a well-earned bowl of Vermicelli with crispy egg rolls and grilled pork patties.

On a rugged winter day, the XL Pho with rare beef and stewed flank is a gateway into a world with rosier pastures. The beef noodle soup comes with a plate of fresh stuff like basil, lime wedges, bean sprouts, and jalapeño slices. It should all be thrown and squeezed into your soup so that you can put the complementary Hoisin sauce and Sambal Chili sauce on the plate for dipping your sliced beef.

Beyond the merits of the food and its quality, this is a family worthy of recognition and very good tips. Steadfastness in a restaurant scene that is on the verge of taking strides (but has been holding itself back for quite sometime) is an inspiration to those of us who want to make a food contribution to this area. Now if the city can just get a drive-thru Bánh mì sandwich shop…
